The Action History

Action History is a list of recent actions that can be undone. Bring this up with Windows > Action History. Every action which can be undone will be appended to the list, so on a simple level, it allows you to view these operations. Actions are listed top-to-bottom from oldest to newest, with the most recent one highlighted at the bottom of the list.

Warning: Not all actions in Scribus are recorded by the undo framework yet. This means that a user will not be able to undo every action he has made – for example, at this time most of the text edit mode actions will not join this list.

Undo and Redo

As we can see in the image above, Polygon2: Set line style is the most recent action, therefore it is highlighted as the window opens. Either clicking Undo or pressing Ctrl+Z will undo this action. However, it will not disappear from the list, but the highlighted selection will move up the list, and the main screen display will show the document's prior state. At this point, Polygon2: Set line style becomes an action which we can redo, this button becoming active, or we can press Shift+Ctrl+Z to return to our original state.

We can also use the mouse to select (highlight) any prior state, and again you will see that all subsequent actions remain in the list and can be redone. One might choose to then save the document in one of these prior states, as desired.

If you wish to replace some actions, ie. truly delete them, click back to a former state, then return to your document to carry out a new editing operation. At this point, you will see all later actions disappear from the list, to be replaced by your new edit action.

Item Action Mode

Something else to note in the above graphic is that, in its basic state, Action History is a global indicator, showing all actions on all objects. You can restrict the Undo/Redo operation to a selected object by either choosing from the menu Edit > Item Action Mode or by clicking the checkbox in the Action History labelled Show selected object only. Thus undo and redo will operate only on the selected object.

The same goes for right-clicking on an item or a page, as undo/redo actions in the Context Menu only apply to the selected item/page.

A limitation of Item Action Mode is that it in effect starts a new individual item history when it is activated, or when switching from one object to another. Prior actions on all objects will still be available by turning off Item Action Mode.
