Scribus on Mac OS X

Installing a binary package of Scribus on Mac OS X is quite simple.

Preparing

If you don't have a current version (8.5 or higher) of GhostScript installed already, download it from Sourceforge, extract the content and move the resulting folder GhostScript.framework to /Library/Frameworks. Scribus should detect Ghostscript automatically. If it doesn't, you can enter the path to gs in Scribus via Preferences > External Tools > PostScript Interpreter.

You don't need to delete an existing copy of Scribus when you're installing a new one.

Installing

  1. Now, download Scribus from SourceForge.
  2. Extract the downloaded file (with the extension tgz). You will have a new application called "Scribus.app" available now. You can move this application wherever you want; the Applications folder in your home directory is a good place.
  3. Double-click on Scribus.app to launch Scribus.

Two problems may arise:

  1. If you have many fonts installed, the first time Scribus starts, it could take up to an hour (but most of the time slightly more than a minute) in order to check all of them.
  2. If Scribus doesn't automatically find Ghostscript (and if this happens you will be warned by an alert), you can set the path to gs (it should be /Library/Frameworks/GhostScript.framework/bin/gs) in the External tools section of the Preferences
