Creating a Table of Contents
From Scribus Documentation Project
Creating a table of contents is technically easy, but it's everything but obvious. The first thing to do is to create a paragraph style for the ToC. The distance between the entries of the ToC and their related page numbers is set by a tabulator. As with other tab stops, you can also choose a fill character between the entries, even though this isn't considered good style.
Once you have created your paragraph style, save it and open File > Document Settings > Document Item Attributes. Click “Add” and enter a name like “ToC” in the “Name” column. Due to a bug that's hard to resolve, you have to click in the “Value” or “Parameter” column once before clicking “OK”. If you forget this step, Scribus won't save the value “ToC”.
Next, create a text frame that will contain your ToC, and insert a unique name like “ToCFrame” for it in the X, Y, Z tab of the Properties Palette.
Open File > Document Settings > Table of Contents and Indexes. Click “Add” to prepare a new ToC. In the dropdown lists on the right choose the attribute we created before – ToC –, the name of the target frame – ToCFrame –, the position of the page numbers in the ToC – “At the end” will be the most natural option – and the paragraph style you created at the beginning. If you want to include text frames that are set not to print, check “List Non-Printing Entries” and click “OK”.
The next step is to tag the text frames that will appear in the ToC. For that purpose, you have to select “Attributes” in the context menu.
This brings up a dialog called “Page Item Attributes”. In the “Name” column select “ToC”, and under “Value” enter the text that is expected to be the entry in the table of contents. Click “OK” to finish the preparations.
The final step is to use Extras > Generate Table of Contents:
If you want to add new entries to your ToC, repeat the steps described above and execute Extras > Generate Table of Contents once again.
